International Children’s Day – Historical Background
Children’s Day began on the second Sunday of June in 1857 by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer. Leonard held a special service dedicated to the children. Later in 1920, Children’s day was first declared as a national holiday by Turkey. In November 1949, at the Moscow Council meeting, the International Federation of Democratic Women decided to celebrate June 1 as the International Children’s Day in memory of male citizens and all babies over the age of 16 who were shot by Nazi Germany in the Czech village of Lidice.

Children’s Day was first proclaimed by President Bill Clinton in 2000. Then the festival was designated by President George. W. Bush in 2001. In nowadays, different states in the U.S.A may have diverse celebrating days of their Children’s Day. In some states of America, there are also many book-reading events held by a large number of public libraries, schools and local communities for children to learn languages and cultures.
